What Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag Frenkie de Jong said about no Champions League football | football | Sports

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has reportedly told Frenkie de Jong the club will go just one year without Champions League football. The 52-year-old is looking forward to reuniting with the Barcelona star, with the duo previously working together at Ajax. And while a deal won’t be easy, talk of a potential move to Old Trafford continues to gather momentum.

Manchester United lose Nemanja Matic this summer, with the Serbia international expected to join Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

And Paul Pogba is also expected to leave, with Juventus currently the front runners in the race to sign the 2018 world champions.

United have therefore registered a stake in De Jong.

The Barcelona star has often struggled for consistency during his time at the Nou Camp and could be unleashed at great cost this summer as the club struggle to balance their finances.

And Sport say Ten Hag have already called De Jong “several times” as the Red Devils look to secure the midfielder’s signature.

It is said that Ten Hag told the midfielder that the club would only go one year without Champions League football.

They want a right-back at a time when Aaron Wan-Bissaka is expected to leave after failing to live up to expectations in his three years at Old Trafford.

A centre-back is also targeted due to links with Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Ajax’s Jurrien Timber.

And United are also looking to ramp up their attack, with Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial heading for the exit door.

The Red Devils have had a good record of Dutch signings during the years that Sir Alex Ferguson ruled the quarters.

Jape Stam, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robin van Persie and Edwin van der Sar were all hits, with the quartet finding success during their time at the club.

But since the Scot left United’s record has become more hit and miss.

Daley Blind was a solid if unspectacular asset during his four years with the Red Devils.

Memphis Depay was a flop after returning from PSV Eindhoven in the summer 2015 transfer window, while the jury remains on Donny van de Beek.

Earlier in the season, Liverpool icon John Barnes insisted De Jong would be the perfect replacement for Pogba at United.

“Frenkie de Jong would be a brilliant signing for Manchester United,” Barnes told BonusCodeBets.

“It looks like Paul Pogba is leaving the club so finding a replacement for him is very important.

“Especially when that person is a young and talented player who gets an opportunity to be one of the main players at the club.

“He has everything in terms of passing range, intensity and a great attitude. That’s exactly what Manchester United needs in midfield.

“That was their plan with Donny van de Beek, but of course he was smothered in his position by other players who played better than him.

“But bringing De Jong in and putting him straight on the side and being trusted would be good for both Manchester United and him.”
