Christina Aguilera, Rita Ora, Taika Waititi and Daniel Levy enjoy the Dior fashion show in Los Angeles.
Word on the street is that Wellywood is getting an injection of stars this August with Taika Waititi’s Time Bandits set to start filming in the capital.
Paramount TV Studios confirmed to Spy that the Kiwi star is co-writing and directing the pilot for Apple’s TV series adaptation of the 1981 Terry Gilliam-directed film, but could not comment further at this time.
Rumors continue that the South Island could do some location shooting for the Apple series outside of the Wellington studios, after the Herald reported earlier this month that Waititi visited Larnach Castle, Wedderburn and Glenorchy, and He was also photographed in Dunedin with the former Flight of The Conchords star. Jemaine Clement.
This followed a mega tourism blitz that Waititi showed his fans on Instagram of him with his children visiting some of the country’s most popular tourist spots, including Hobbiton.
Another funny man who would make a great casting for Time Bandits is UK creative genius Sacha Baron Cohen, who this week hinted that he has been trying to work with Waititi since 2014 after seeing What we do in the Shadows. He synopsed the Kiwi director’s place on Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential list this week, where he compared the Kiwi director and co-writer to Picasso.
“A film can be said to have been made by Taika Waititi, in the same way a piece can be said to have been painted by Picasso,” wrote Baron Cohen.
“Not that he doesn’t know where the eyes go on his face, but how he expresses his unique voice.
“Taika has won an Oscar and made successful, hilarious and moving films. Yet he always brings a light touch to his work. He tells stories that are fully watchable, even when they are sad or satirical. And they are always funny.”
Waititi joked on Twitter that a list of 100 seemed like too many people “but I’ll take it” and thanked Time and Baron Cohen.
Waititi’s girlfriend, UK pop star Rita Ora, was proud as a punch and made a scream on Instagram.
Baron Cohen may not have met Waititi in person yet, but Ora reportedly dined with his fellow Brit last May along with his wife, Australian actress Isla Fisher, and fellow heavy hitters Russell Crowe and Christian Bale at the restaurant. Sydney’s China Doll during her time. Downunder filming The Voice Australia.
Waititi is now firmly back in Hollywood land, accompanying Ora to a Dior show last week. The pair lit up the front rows in February at Milan Fashion Week, and Los Angeles was no different.
The collection was a collaboration between Dior Men’s Artistic Director Kim Jones and local fashion designer Eli Russell Linnetz of ERL, called ERL Dior Venice Beach Party.
Ora posted selfies dressed in men’s Dior suits with Jones, as well as snaps with Waititi and supermodels Shalom Harlow and Amber Valletta at the post-show party.
The pair sat between Schitt’s Creek creator and star Daniel Levy and singer-songwriter Christina Aguilera.
