Ivan Perisic has insisted he wants to play professional football until he is 40.

The Croatian has aged like a fine wine and enjoyed two fantastic seasons at left-back. One of these was under Antonio Conte, where he played a key role in helping Inter end Juventus’s Serie A dominance and bring the 2020/21 Scudetto to the San Siro.

Despite his age of 33, Perisic remains extremely fit and insists he is ready to prove himself in the most physically demanding league in the world.

He told Sky Sports: “It matters how you feel inside. I like to work every day, I like to work hard and when we do the sprint test I’m still at the level. My wish is to play until I’m 40 and I think I’m at my best now and I still have a lot to give.

“I’m done. I know it’s going to be tough. I’ve been following the Premier League for many years. I know the pace is amazing but like I said I’m ready and I’ve worked hard over the last season and prepared to to come here and be competitive here.”

Perisic scored ten goals and provided nine assists from left-back in all competitions last season (Transfermarkt).

Conte helped transform Spurs’ new signing into a prolific full-back at Inter Milan and Perisic admitted the position suited his characteristics perfectly.

He added: “With him [Conte], I changed my position and he likes to play three back. At Inter we used to play 3-5-2 and I was on the left as a full-back.

“In the beginning it took me a couple of games to adjust. It’s really something new after so many years as a winger, but I think later I did well.

“Especially last season with [Inter boss Simone] Inzaghi, because we’ve always played the same tactics and are now trying to use a similar system here as well.

“I like playing in this position because I have more contact with the ball than on the wing and most of the time facing goal – and I also like helping the defence. I think it’s the perfect position for me.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It can be argued that despite the hype surrounding the Bissouma and Richarlison conquests, Perisic was our most important signing of the summer. Full-backs are central to Conte and I believe the Croatian will contribute 10-15 goals over the course of the season.
