The former England football team chef is retiring from Droitwich’s famed country pub, The Checkers

The renowned pub The Checkers on Cutnall Green rose to fame as a country pub on the outskirts of Birmingham after being taken over in 2000 by a former England football team chef. But after 22 years, the famous gastro-pub has changed hands as Roger Narbett and his wife Jo are retiring.

Smethwick-born Roger, who was once head chef at the Hyatt in Birmingham city centre, has sold his pride and joy to the owners of another well-established Worcestershire pub. Henry and Emma Pearman, who own The Horseshoes in Belbroughton, are adding The Checkers to their pub range from May 26th.

As a chef for England players from 1989, Roger cooked for the country’s most famous footballers from Wayne Rooney to Glenn Hoddle, David Beckham and John Terry at Euro and World Cup tournaments. He also used his talents as a chef de partie at Le Gavroche in London before opening The Checkers near Kidderminster with his wife.

Roger and Jo Narbett said: “After over 20 years of owning The Checkers Cutnall Green we have decided that now is the time to pass the baton to the next generation. We are delighted to hand this very special pub over to established innkeepers and the current owners of The Horseshoes Belbroughton, Henry and Emma Pearman.

“We know they will do a great job and we are putting the pub in very capable hands. The shop has brought us so many happy memories and friendships over the years and we thoroughly enjoyed our time here.

“We are now looking forward to starting the next chapter in our lives and spending more time with our family. We would like to thank everyone who has been a part of this journey with us over the years; this includes our suppliers, our loyal customers and most importantly our employees, all of whom will continue to be employed by Henry and Emma.

“The Checkers will always hold a very special place in our hearts and we look forward to returning as customers in the near future.”

New owners Henry and Emma said: “We are delighted to continue the legacy they have built so strongly over the past 20 years.
