EVART – Evart (4-1, 5-1) rebounded from last week’s 26-21 loss to Beal City on Friday to hand host McBain (2-3, 2-4) a 48-20 loss on Friday at the Action Highland Conference.
Evart had leads in the quarters of 7-6, 14-6 and 27-12. It was a 21-8 scoring lead for Evart in the fourth quarter.
Cole Hopkins had 26 rushes for 193 yards and four touchdowns. Preston Wallace went 12-for-21 for 186 passing yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Marcel White had four catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Jaxson Craven had 14 tackles. Tanner Graber had 13 tackles. Dakobe White had two interceptions, including one that returned 35 yards for a touchdown. Hopkins had 10 tackles and one fumble recovery. Jake Ladd had seven tackles and caused a fumble.
“I think our kids bounced back really well from last week,” Evart’s trainer Pat Craven said. “We had a tremendous week of practice with the intention of really getting back on the field and doing it again against McBain. I am very proud of his effort. We got a big win over McBain. It’s never an easy place to play.”

Ferris 3, Hillsdale 1
BIG FAST: The Ferris State University women’s volleyball team earned a big win at home in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to take sole possession of first place in the league standings on Friday night as FSU topped Northern Michigan 3-1 inside Jim Wink Arena.
The Bulldogs took the opening frame 26-24 and posted a 25-22 win in the second before NMU cut the margin to 2-1 with a 25-23 win in the third. However, FSU took control early in the fourth set and cruised to a 25-13 victory to clinch victory.
In just their second home game of the year, the Bulldogs hit an impressive .410 overall, which included compiling an attacking figure of .357 or better in each of four sets of action.
Ferris State was run by sophomore Claire Nowicki and freshman Emma Bleecher, as they each recorded 16 deaths. Middle hitter Syann Fairfield added 15 kills and Olivia Henneman-Dallape finished with 10 kills for the Bulldogs.
FSU sophomore setter Kaylee Maat notched 55 assists to orchestrate the Bulldog attack and also finished with 16 digs, matching libero Leah Bylut for top team honors. Nowicki added 13 digs and Bleecher had 11 digs for the Bulldogs.
Overall, the Bulldogs finished with 66 kills and just nine offensive errors in 139 attempts. FSU also compiled 74 digs to go with nine service aces and eight block assists in addition to a solo block.
The Wildcats were limited to a .224 batting percentage, recording 55 kills and 19 offensive errors in 161 attempts. NMU totaled 58 digs to go with eight aces and two block assists along with a solo block at net.
With the win, Ferris State improved to 9-7 overall and 7-1 in GLIAC, while Northern Michigan fell to 13-3 overall and 6-2 in league action. The two teams had entered the game tied for the top of the league standings, but FSU cruised to victory over Northern Michigan for the second time in as many head-to-head matchups this year.

Ferries 1, Saginaw Valley 1
The Ferris State University women’s soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Friday at Bulldog Soccer Field in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game.
Ferris State opened the scoring for the contest at 5:55 when sophomore Lindsay Cole released Isabella Zamborini for a break. Zamborini curled a shot into the left goal post for a 1-0 lead for Bulldog and his team-leading fifth goal of the season. The attendance was Cole’s second of the year.
By halftime, Ferris State held an 8-4 shooting lead, although Saginaw Valley State held a narrow 2-1 shooting lead at the rim of the goal.
Midway through the second half, Stephanie Strong evened the score for SVSU, lifting a shot past Ferris State sophomore goalie Darya Mosallaei to tie the game 1-1 at 69:59.
Ferris State finished with a 19-13 shooting advantage, although SVSU held a 6-3 shooting lead in the game.
In goal, Mosallaei made five saves as the Bulldogs tied. The Cardinals had to turn to Lainey Garbarz in relief just 16:03 after Kennedi Pugh left the game in shock. Garbarz made two saves in the game, while Pugh made one and allowed Zamborini to score. Garbarz got the score for the Cardinals at the net.
Ferris State went to 4-3-3 with the tie, and is out of the league until next week. The Bulldogs will play a rescheduled non-conference game when they host Northwood on Monday (Oct. 3) at 4 pm ET at Bulldog Soccer Field.

The Ferris State University men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the weekend’s action on Friday (September 30) at the Lansing Community College Invitational held at Grand Woods Park.
The Bulldogs were fifth overall in the men’s standings with 152 points, while the women were seventh with 182 points.
The gathering included student-athletes from various schools across the state, including Michigan State, Lansing CC, Wayne State, Calvin, Hillsdale, Madonna and others.
In Friday’s action, the Bulldog men were led by Jackson Helmer, who placed 29th overall (27:09.5) in the 8K course. Gavin Vansolkema was ranked 35th (27:16.0) with Cooper Sorsen 38th (27:26.6) and Ethan Hamilton 44th (27:41.8). Tristan Lovett was placed in 46th place (27:42.9).
Meanwhile, in the women’s action, Abigail Winkle edged out Ferris State in the 5K, as she placed 21st overall in 20:17.0. FSU’s Amelia Topoliski was ranked 45th (21:24.1) with Lauren Sinnaeve 48th (21:30.8), Kaylee Huey 49th (21:36.0), and Claudio Baryo 56th (21:45.3).
