Ten Hag was officially unveiled as the club’s new manager last Monday but had flown to the capital a week earlier – immediately after the conclusion of the Eredivisie season – to begin implementing plans to overhaul the underperforming side.
Transfers will play a key role in the Dutchman’s revolution and he has been linked to a host of his former Ajax players – who know his philosophy and tactics like the back of their hand.
The 20-year-old’s agent was spotted at United’s London offices last week – the same base of operations Ten Hag worked from – and the youngster is open to joining the Red Devils.
Timber is a “huge favourite” of Ten Hag and the United boss is looking forward to being reunited at Old Trafford and the club are now scrambling hard to strike a deal.
Ajax are believed to want up to £35m for the versatile centre-back, who has also been pursued by German champions Bayern Munich.
His already existing relationship with Ten Hag gives United an advantage, although there is still a long way to go to get a deal across the line as Ajax are keen to keep the defender.
The Dutch champions have already lost Noussair Mazraoui on a free transfer, the contract rebel is moving to Bayern, and Bayern are also working on a deal for midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.
Speaking about Timber earlier this month, Ten Hag was effusive in his praise, saying: “I think all the top clubs in Europe have Timber in their sights.”
As for speculation about his future, Timber himself told Het Parool: “I’m good at Ajax. I can still learn a lot, especially if we continue to play in the Champions League.”
On Ten Hag, the defender added: “He deserves it [the United job]. Ten Hag was very important to me personally.
“Under him I became a footballer, the man I am today. The coach talked to me a lot. He was very critical, in a good, constructive way. I won’t forget that in a hurry.”
As well as signing Timber, Ten Hag also reportedly want a new, high-profile striker, two central midfielders – one more defensive and the other more attacking – as well as a right winger and a right-back.
