Spain 1-1 Portugal: Ricardo Horta scores on international return in a draw

Ricardo Horta scored in his first appearance for Portugal in almost eight years as they drew against Spain in the opening Nations League game in Seville.

Spaniard Alvaro Morata scored the opening goal, completing a clever move between Gavi and Pablo Sarabia.

Braga’s Horta, who earned his first cap as a teenager in 2014, came off the bench and pocketed Joao Cancelo’s cross.

It has been almost 10 years since this game has been won by both sides, with the last five meetings all being draws.

Jordi Alba should have won the game for Spain when he missed the goal from eight yards.

Spaniard Carlos Soler and Portuguese striker Rafael Leao both squandered Morata’s shot in the 25th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The visitors, who won the 2019 tournament, brought on Cristiano Ronaldo in the second half but he was not involved in the 82nd-minute equalizer that was Horta’s first international goal.

This is only the second time in nine games in all competitions that Spain have not won. The other was last year’s Nations League final defeat by France.

In the other game of Group A2, the Czech Republic beat Switzerland 2-1.

On Sunday the Czechs meet Spain and Portugal at home against Switzerland.
