Souttar hopes Scotland win

JOHN SOUTTAR will be hoping to win his fifth cap for Scotland later tonight when Dark Blues take on Ukraine in their World Cup play-off semi-final.

Scotland have not played a competitive game since November, that was their memorable 2-0 win over previously unbeaten Denmark in Hampden to secure a home game against the Ukrainians.

Souttar scored the opening goal that night at the National Stadium and is keen to take his place in Steve Clarke’s defense again tonight as they look to set up a delicious clash with Wales – winners of that November advancement to Qatar – in Cardiff on Sunday.

Speaking of before the game, Souttar said: “To be involved with Scotland in any capacity at the moment is fantastic. There is a good atmosphere across the camp and to be there for these games would be brilliant.

“I want to be at the World Cup and I think everyone in the country is doing that. I know all the boys and I will do everything to make that happen.”

With the move to Rangers and the opportunity to play regularly in European football, Souttar hopes his chances of winning those five caps to date will increase.

He continued: “Coming to a big club like Rangers gives you the opportunity to play in Europe and play at a high level and hopefully through that it will make me a mainstay of the national team.”

Scotland’s rescheduled calendar due to the postponement of Ukraine’s first game date in March means a hectic four or possibly five games in 14 days.

Their final game comes just under two weeks before Ger’s return for pre-season – but having recovered from serious injury problems lately Souttar doesn’t mind at all as he’s just dying to work as a ranger.

He added: “There won’t be much time left but after going through the last two years I just want to play football and I’m looking forward to coming here.

“I’m sure there will be an off-season program but I’m just looking forward to starting with this club.”
