Manchester United legends Sir Alex Ferguson and David Beckham were among those who paid tribute to longtime receptionist Kath Phipps after she received a special award this week.

The 81-year-old, who joined the Red Devils under legendary coach Sir Matt Busby in 1968, received the League Managers Association Service to Football award.

Ms Phipps was present at a special dinner in London on Tuesday night and accepted her award alongside Ferguson and former United midfielder, coach and caretaker manager Michael Carrick.

She said it was “a great honor” to be recognized by the League Managers Association on Tuesday.

Ms Phipps told the club’s official website: “In September 1968 I simply applied for the job at Les Olive and got it within days,” Kath said. “Sir Alex was my longest-serving manager. He was always there for me, every time. It is absolutely brilliant to work for him.

“I don’t think we’ve ever crossworded in all the years I’ve known him. Even on match days. We’re like brother and sister – that’s how he talks to me.

“I just get up every morning a happy person. I come here and I just love seeing them all. I’ll miss her someday when I’m not here, but I don’t want to give it up just yet.’

In a video message from Miami, Beckham said: “I want to send you a congratulatory message tonight on the award. It’s for your services to football, but more importantly for your services to Manchester United. A club I love, you love and many others love.”

He said she was “the first person I saw walking into the reception at the training ground” and he was “forever grateful” to her for looking at letters from his fans.

Ms Phipps, who joined Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Chelsea Women manager Emma Hayes as the award winner that night, said she had “a lovely evening”.

Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson said she was “and remains a superb servant of the club” and that the award was “thoroughly deserved”.

Ex-United star Gary Neville posted a picture of her on Instagram before receiving the award, saying every time he saw her at Old Trafford: “It makes me prouder to have played for the club”.
