We assembled our Scout Picks “bus team” ahead of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 1.
For those who haven’t seen this series of articles, it’s essentially a rough first draft of our regular selection, which will be finalized and released much closer to the deadline.
We’re limited to a budget of £83.0m for our starting XI, although the bench options are – currently – not just unplayable fodder like you might have in your own squads.
We’re actually doing a poll below as to whether they should be part of a larger overall budget of £100m, or if you’d prefer they stay as is and offer cheap, more playable alternatives to the first XI, but Not price limited.
The final picks remain as they are, solidifying our weekly picks based on Scout Squad longlist entries and new injury updates, but this “Busteam” article – a term coined by the Always Cheating boys – will discuss the players who are expected to be in the race.
So here they are: our initial thoughts on the runners and drivers that will be selected in Gameweek 1, followed by the preliminary selections themselves.
THE LIKELY BOYS
There weren’t many weeks when Trent Alexander Arnold (£7.5m) and Mohammed Salah (£13.0m) were not included in the Scout Picks last season and the Liverpool duo are very likely to feature again in Gameweek 1 of the new campaign.
Alexander-Arnold was naturally the top-scoring FPL defender in 2021/22, averaging one return (be it a goal, an assist or a clean sheet) per game. Given his scoring potential at both ends of the pitch, the right-back still feels undervalued even at £7.5m.
As for Salah, we don’t need much encouragement, but it’s worth noting that he’s traditionally a very quick starter. In fact, the Egyptian has managed to score on the opening day of every season since signing for the Reds in 2017.
SALAH’S RECORD ON OPENING DAY
|season||Matchweek 1 opponents||Goals||assists||bonus||FPL points|
|2020/21||Leeds United (h)||3||3||20|
|2019/20||Norwich City (h)||1||1||2||12|
|2018/19||West Ham United (h)||1||8th|
Tottenham Hotspur attacks representation, be it through Harry Kane (£11.5m) or son Heung-min (£12.0m) is also looking good for the Scout picks, with Southampton first for the Lilywhites on Saturday.
The Spurs pair were in electric form following the arrival of Antonio Conte last season and combined 44 offensive returns in 2022 alone.
More goals were scored by Kane and Son in pre-season, resuming one of the most devastating partnerships in the Premier League and one of them will almost certainly be at the service of the scout picks in the first week of play.
