Report: Rangers B 3-2 Cowdenbeath

RANGERS B team picked up three points this afternoon after beating Cowdenbeath 3-2 at Dumbarton Stadium in the Lowland League.

The young Gers hosted Maurice Ross’ side at home today and picked up three points in the league after Charlie McCann scored a second-half double followed by a last-minute winner from Connor Young.

Adam Devine joined the defensive backline this afternoon alongside Robbie Fraser, Connor Allan and Lewis MacKinnon, followed by Lewis Budinauckas in goals.

Charlie Lindsay joined Mackenzie Strachan and Charlie McCann in midfield, while Alex Lowry and Zak Lovelace supported Robbie Ure up front.

The Light Blues started the game calm and collected as Ross’ side pressed early on in Rangers’ final third.

The visitors had some early chances to threaten the Light Blues’ box but Budinauckas made some crucial saves, with the defense defusing any remaining threat.

After that, McCallum’s side began creating dangerous chances to threaten Daniel Farrell in the Cowdenbeath goal. Lindsay made an excellent run down the left, snaking past several red shirts and breaking into the box, sending a quick try across the front of the goal but Ure just couldn’t hit his delivery at the back post.

Cowdenbeath was following after David Struthers sent a strike from outside the Rangers box but his shot went just wide of the back post.

The two sides continued to battle fiercely across the field as they attempted to score the first goal and gain the advantage.

Fifteen minutes before the end of the first half, the light blues were about to break the deadlock and secure the lead.

Lowry sent a great ball into the box at an oncoming McCann and the midfielder then sent a sail shot towards goal but Farrell made a great save to deny Rangers the opener. Ure found himself in space to absorb the distraction, but his shot drifted over the bar.

Less than a minute later, the young Gers were awarded a penalty after Lovelace was brought down in the Cowdenbeath box. The in-form youngster got up to take the penalty but Farrell made another crucial save to hold the goal line as they went into half-time.

As the side returned to the second half, the young Gers started with momentum as they tried to find the opening goal, but it was the visitors who took the early lead after Aidan Gilmartin slotted the ball into back net from a corner kick one minute into the second 45.

Cowdenbeath built on that momentum and found his second a few minutes later to double his advantage after Scott Sinclair collected the ball in Rangers’ half and ran towards Budinauckas in goal, where he was able to slide it past young Ger.

McCallum’s force quickly made efforts to rectify this and close the gap. McCann was able to do so in the 53rd minute after firing a low shot at goal, his shot then deflected and landed in the bottom corner of the net.

Cowdenbeath continued to pressure Buinauckas with goals and almost scored a third, but McCann was on hand again to score his second of the game and equalize for the home side.

The youngster caught the ball a few meters from the penalty area and sent a sail past the goalkeeper into the top corner to give his team an equalizer.

The Gers were keen to build on that and find third place to give them the all-important lead. Substituting for Zak Lovelace, Connor Young made an immediate impression after scoring the third and decisive goal in the 88th minute.

Much like McCann’s second goal, the young Ger found the ball several yards outside the Cowdenbeath box and sent a shot that flew past Farrell in goal into the back net to secure the afternoon’s win.
