Rangers join the inaugural Scottish Women’s Premier League

It was a historic day at Hampden Park on Wednesday as the Scottish Women’s Premier League held its first annual general meeting.

The meeting confirmed the realignment of SWPL 1, which will now see twelve teams fighting for the title. The AGM also approved the formation of SWPL 2, where eight teams will enter the league to compete in the second tier championship.

With the appointment of the Board and 20 teams confirmed across the two leagues, this is the start of an exciting new format created with the aim of developing professional women’s football across the country.

Women’s and girls’ soccer manager Amy McDonald said: “This is an incredibly important and historic moment for women’s football across Scotland.

“I am delighted to be part of the first club-appointed directors on the SWPL Board and look forward to seeing the first 20 clubs compete in their inaugural campaign next season across the two leagues.

“This is a monumental step for women’s professional football across the country and I am honored to be a part of it. A lot of hard work has gone into achieving this moment and it is vital that Scottish women’s football continues to strive for success.” The clubs set to form the SWPL are:

  • Boroughmuir Thistle FC

  • East Fife FC

  • Gartcairn FC

  • Kilmarnock FC

  • FC Montrose

  • Queen Park F.C

  • St Johnstone F.C

  • Stirling University F.C

In addition, the following individuals have been elected as directors of the SWPL Board.
