Queens Park Rangers 3-2 Middlesbrough: Rs hold on to first win of the season

QPR picked up their first points of the season as they repelled a strong Middlesbrough comeback to earn a narrow win at Loftus Road.

Chris Willock made a spectacular opener, driving forward and shaking off two defenders before firing a shot into the top corner before James Dunne headed into the corner of Ilias Chair to double the lead.

It was 3-0 when Lyndon Dykes headed in from a Stefan Johansen free-kick before Matt Crooks’ header gave the visitors some hope before the break.

Marcus Forss’ close-range finish on his first start made it 3-2 and an equalizer was thwarted when Paddy McNair’s attempt for offside was ruled out before Boro’s Darragh Lenihan was sent off in injury time.

The sides scored nine goals in their two league games last season and the pattern continued in a scoring opening hour.

Rangers failed to find a shot on target in the league opener at Blackburn and manager Michael Beale’s three substitutions worked as Willock and Dunne both found the net within 30 minutes.

Rangers had lost four of their last five home games in a dismal end to last season but in Beale’s first game in charge at Loftus Road it was a different story altogether with a stunning first-half performance which Dyke crowned by winning his 13th game. Aim of the game drought.

Boro has won just one of their last nine meetings but gave real hope when Crooks headed in and then found Forss to make it 3-2 with more than 30 minutes left.

The visitors were much better after the break and only the assistant referee’s flag prevented McNair from intercepting them from Ryan Giles’ cross.

But late on it was the hosts who came closest to conceding the game’s sixth goal as Albert Adomah missed a try before Lenihan saw the red after his foul denied Macauley Bonne a clear run on target.
