Original Writer Insists Darth Maul Was Never Part Of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

Lucasfilm’s original writer Obi Wan Kenobi series, Hossein Amini, insists that Darth Maul was never part of the Disney Plus project.

Back in 1999, Star Wars: Episode One: The Phantom Menace hit theaters. While reactions to the film were mixed at best, many of the characters and actors became beloved icons of the franchise. This included the character of Darth Maul and Ewan Mcgregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Darth Maul was apparently killed during the climax of the phantom menace but came back for him star wars, clone wars series and became a recurring antagonist with a grudge against Obi-Wan Kenobi. The character would return Star Wars: Rebels where Kenobi left him forever. The character also made a cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story and many have wondered if he would appear in the next Obi Wan Kenobi DisneyPlus series.

Series director Deborah Chow has denied this, stating that while she was involved with the series, the character was never involved with the series. Now Amini has confirmed that she was never like this.

During a recent interview on the Script Apart Podcast, the original Obi Wan Kenobi Hossein Amini was asked if Darth Maul was ever involved in the series. Amini confirmed that the discussions he had about the series never seriously mentioned the character:

“No. No, I don’t think that’s ever been…no, certainly not. It goes back so long, there’s been so many cartoons now, but certainly in the discussions I’ve had there was never any real mention of it.”
