Earlier this year, Sony Pictures announced that there is a series of Ghostbusters projects on the horizon, including a sequel to Ghostbusters: Beyond (2021). Since then, there has been a lot of news surrounding the movie, such as the return of cast members and even a release date.
Now, we finally have an update on one of the other two projects, both animated and currently in development with Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix. One is a TV series and the other is a feature film, which will be the first in the franchise.

In a recent interview with The Wrap, Jennifer Kluska, one of the directors of the animated film (along with Chris Prynoski), offered some insight into the upcoming project and how it will fit into the larger context. Ghostbusters universe. This is what she said:
“It feels very good and appropriate to return to Ghostbusters in an animated form. It seems like a lot of Ghostbusters fans hail from that space as well. And that gives you a bigger, weirder stage to play on. And I think we obviously want to do something very new and different, like we always do, but we know there are a lot of Ghostbusters fans who are just waiting to see this animated franchise again.”

Kluska of course refers to two previous Ghostbusters animated tickets, 80s cartoon series the real ghostbusters (1986) and the spin-off series extreme ghostbusters (1997). The upcoming film will be the first time for the franchise in animated form in more than 25 years.
The co-director also went on to discuss the general style of the film, saying:
“By design, this is going to be different. I think all the movies Sony makes are very self-consciously different in style and tone, and increasingly visually. Technology and art drive the medium and we’re going to pursue our own approach that will be a very specific tie-in to the Ghostbusters franchise, to the world of the supernatural and to ghost storytelling.”

During this year Ghostbusters Day (June 8), Ghostbusters: Beyond Director Jason Reitman described the project as having “all new characters” and being “a whole new take on this [Ghostbusters] world.” He also went on to say the following:
“This was a passion project of my father [Ivan Reitman] and it is easy to understand why. The world of the unknown can only be properly explored through the limitless scope of animation.”

There is no word on what the animation style will be, however another ’80s property that currently has an animated film in the works is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtleswhich will hit theaters on August 4, 2023.
There is currently no release date for the Ghostbusters animated movie or Ghostbusters animated series It is also to be confirmed whether or not these projects will be canon with the main Ghostbusters movie series. As such, it’s possible that they could be resets in their own right.
