The 31-year-old now plays for Sydney A-League side Macarthur FC.

The death of his beloved partner this week has left him devastated while the football community has reached out to comfort him.

Macarthur FC said: “We are saddened to hear that Ulises Dávila’s wife Lily tragically passed away overnight.

“The club would like to express its heartfelt condolences to Uli, Uli Jr. and the extended family at this difficult time.”

The official A-League social media account wrote: “Everyone in the A-Leagues is saddened by the tragic news from @mfcbulls that Ulises Dávila’s wife Lily passed away overnight.”

Several other Australian clubs also posted touching tributes.

Attacking midfielder Davila came through the youth teams of his hometown club Guadalajara.

He was picked up by Chelsea and signed a five-year deal in west London in 2011 aged 20 – becoming the first Mexican to join the club.

Davila was loaned to Vitesse, Sabadell, Cordoba, Tenerife and Vitoria before making a permanent move to Santos Laguna in his home country in 2015.

This meant Davila did not make a single first-team appearance for the Blues.

In 2018 he was considering retirement but Lily inspired him to accept a contract with Indian Super League side Delhi Dynamos which reignited his love for football.

Davila told the My Football Podcast this year: “In a moment I thought… if India doesn’t work, I’ll just retire and I don’t want to know more about football.

“My wife said, ‘Whatever you want, whatever you need, I will follow you or stay, whatever you want.’

“I thought maybe it’s time to reset and change my whole life. Let’s try again.

“I said I’m going and she said, ‘Perfect.’ “I played a few games in India and told my wife, ‘I can still play.'”

Davila then had two seasons in New Zealand with Wellington Phoenix during which time their son Uli Jr. was born in March 2020.

However, travel restrictions and separation meant he was only able to see his wife or baby via FaceTime before they could move in with him in 2021.

Despite this, Davila was named 2020-21 A-League Player of the Year and received the prestigious Johnny Warren Medal.

The former Mexico youth international added during his time at Wellington: “When you’re on the pitch you don’t think about those things, but during the week you’re more stressed and you’re overthinking so that’s certainly affecting you.

“I can now be happy with them and focus on football and not worry about a lot of FaceTime calls with them.

“It’s an amazing feeling and I’m so happy to bring her here. Everything is perfect now so I can just focus on football now.”

He joined Macarthur last year and finished the season as top scorer and member player of the year.

Just two weeks ago, Davila snapped photos with his individual trophies from this season and smiled next to Lily at awards night.
