Match Preview: Mansfield Town – News

It’s our first trip of the new season as Micky Mellon’s side look to hit the bull’s eye with a more positive result away at Mansfield Town after last weekend’s defeat.

It was a disappointing first result of the season but as the signings begin to solidify Micky is hoping to build some momentum as soon as possible.

With Mansfield in mind, they started their 22/23 season with an away loss to Salford City after losing 2-0 at Peninsula Stadium.

Goals from Callum Hendry and Brandon Thomas-Asante sealed the opening day win over the Stags, leaving both teams looking for their first respective wins on Saturday afternoon.

Team News:

Micky Mellon has reported he will have the same group of players to choose from as last week, with Davies, Morris, Mumbongo and Turnbull still not in action.

One to watch: Lucas Akins

A well-known figure in the EFL, Akins is very experienced having ended an eight-year tenure at Burton in January of last season.

Born in West Yorkshire, Akins started his career at Huddersfield Town and played five games in the first team before joining Hamilton Academical.

But the short stint in Scotland ended after two years when the winger, who started as a striker, moved to Prenton Park in 2010. He played over 70 games in front of the Super White Army before joining Stevenage last weekend.

And after two years at Stevenage, he moved to Burton Albion, where he repeatedly wrote the Brewers history books.

Akins holds the record for most Burton Albion appearances at 305 and most goals scored at 65 in the EFL and enjoyed some very successful years at the Pirelli Stadium.

But after eight years, Akins left the Brewers to move to Mansfield to work with former Burton manager Nigel Clough.

Since arriving from Burton, Akins has featured in all but three games. He was a ubiquitous player for the Mansfield side who narrowly failed in the play-off final last season after being defeated by Port Vale under the arc of Wembley.

Managing Director: Nigel Clough

Another veteran figure in the top four echelons of English football, Nigel Clough will be keen to see his Mansfield side go that extra mile this season after falling at the final hurdle last season.

Before taking over the Stags, Clough worked at Derby County, Sheffield United and Burton, among others.

He had some time at Burton, having promoted them from the Northern Premier League for the first time in his fourth season after taking over in 1998.

Clough stayed with Burton and would lead them into the Football League before taking the opportunity at Derby County and leaving his Burton side, later promoted despite the change in leadership.

After a two-year stint at Sheffield United, Clough returned to Burton for a further five campaigns before taking charge of Mansfield Town in November 2020.

After his first full season in charge resulted in a final defeat in the playoffs, Clough hopes his side can take a step further this season and move up to the third tier of English football.
