Erik ten Hag faces mounting transfer frustration as Manchester United fear they will be priced out of a summer move for Darwin Nunez.

Ten Hag has already started work as the new United manager to transform the club after a nightmare 2021/22 season that saw the Red Devils finish sixth in the Premier League and go trophyless for the fifth straight year. The Glazers have appointed former Ajax manager Ten Hag to make bold changes, with the Dutchman tasked with overhauling the club’s playing style while building a squad that will see drastic changes this summer.

Benfica striker Nunez is one of Ten Hag’s main targets to improve United’s offensive options, although the Uruguayan won’t come cheap. United’s summer budget has been hit by missing out on Champions League football, and – as first reported in the Daily Star – Now Benfica United have revealed it will cost around £100m to bring Nunez to Old Trafford. Such a fee would make the 22-year-old Nunez the most expensive signing in British football history alongside Jack Grealish, who left Aston Villa for Manchester City for a nine-figure sum a year ago.

The Red Devils believe Benfica’s valuation is too high for a player who has played less than 60 games for the Portuguese giants. United won’t back away from a possible deal but have urged Benfica to give a more realistic assessment.

Nunez joined Benfica in 2020 for €24m (£20.4m) from Spanish club Almeria. The deal made the forward the most expensive signing in Portuguese football history, although the club is aiming for a huge return on his initial investment. He has established himself as one of the most sought-after young talents in Europe, while Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea are also keeping a close eye on the striker.

Nunez was a huge success in Lisbon, scoring 26 goals in 28 games in his second season to finish as the league’s top scorer. Nunez made his international debut in 2019, scoring in his first appearance against Peru. United have had him watched on several occasions and are keen to strike a deal but are not being held for ransom and are willing to look elsewhere if Benfica refuse to drop the asking price.

The recent situation with Nunez has Ten Hag facing increasing frustration in his attempts to land some of his summer goals. Declan Rice is expected to spend another season at West Ham, Kalvin Phillips prefers a move to Manchester City while Jude Bellingham would prefer to join Liverpool if he decides to leave Borussia Dortmund.
