Leeds transfer news: Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson signs five-year deal | football news

Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson has signed a five-year contract with Leeds United.

Sky sports news understands the 21-year-old has joined for a fee of €29m (£24.7m). The move will be completed on July 1st.

Aaronson made 41 appearances in all competitions for Salzburg last season, providing 10 assists and scoring six goals as the club lifted the Austrian Bundesliga and Austrian Cup for the second straight season.

Leeds initially tried to sign the US international in the January transfer window. Aaronson is primarily an attacking midfielder but he can also play in a number of roles and it’s his versatility that head coach Jesse Marsch will be delighted with.

In January 2021, the midfielder joined Red Bull Salzburg from Philadelphia Union for an undisclosed fee, joining Marsch, who was in charge of the Austrian team at the time.

He made 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals and helping Marsch and Salzburg win the Austrian league and cup double.

As well as his second Austrian double last season, Aaronson also made 10 appearances in the Champions League and helped Salzburg reach the round of 16 of the tournament.

In the coming weeks he will play with the US national team against Morocco, Uruguay, Grenada and El Salvador.

The transfer is subject to the required international clearance and a work permit.

Brenden Aaronson says his move from Salzburg to Leeds United and the Premier League is a ‘dream come true’.

Aaronson tells Sky sports news: “I like to say I was a football addict growing up watching Premier League games, it’s a dream to be here.

“I had to play with my team and give them everything I had with Red Bull Salzburg and give them everything I had for the rest of the season. I focused on that, but I also looked at the results from Leeds and this last one had it done i sweat a little.

“He [Marsch] was definitely a factor, but in general the club was just a massive draw for me. How big, how historic, what the fans are like, what the team is like, it’s a dream place for me.”
