Roma boss Jose Mourinho has sent a farewell message to Ainsley Maitland-Niles after the Europa Conference League-winning midfielder returned to parent club Arsenal.

The 24-year-old joined the Italian capital from north London in January and was on loan until the end of the season but only made eight appearances for the club in Serie A – as many as in the first half of the Premier League season.

While Maitland-Niles may not have received the playing time he would have liked, he has been lifting silverware with the Giallorossi.

The versatile midfielder did not come on as a substitute in Roma’s 1-0 win over Feyenoord in the Europa Conference League final in Tirana earlier this month – a result that ended the club’s 14-year trophy wait.

Excited to play a role in a season that will long remain etched in the minds of Roma fans, Maitland-Niles sent a heartfelt message to supporters on Instagram.

“Great way to end the season,” the Arsenal man wrote, also uploading a picture of him holding the Europa Conference League trophy.

“Thank you to the Roma fans, players and staff who hugged me and believed in me as one of theirs for the short time they spent at the club. What an experience to be part of history with the club.”

Although Mourinho has only used Maitland-Niles sporadically and has little desire to turn his loan deal into a permanent one, the Portugal manager sent his outgoing player a message via social media.

In response to Maitland-Niles’ farewell post on Instagram, Mourinho replied: “We will miss you. One of us.’

Maitland-Niles now faces an uncertain future at Arsenal and is expected to leave the club this summer as he appears to be overwhelmed under Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners have previously been waiting for a large sum for the midfielder – turning down a sizeable offer from Wolves not long ago – but this time they may have to settle for around £8m given Maitland-Niles have been so little football lately has played.

Crystal Palace were linked with a move last summer – where ex-gunner Patrick Vieira is of course the manager – while Wolves are said to still retain an interest.
