Chelsea have made a late inquiry about the availability of Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar despite reports that he faces significant competition from Paris Saint-Germain.

Thomas Tuchel has made the signing of two new centre-backs his top priority this summer after losing two pillars of his defence, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, on a free transfer.

The west London club had long been linked with a move to Sevilla’s Jules Kounde but seemed to have cooled their interest with Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt being pursued instead.

For the second centre-back, Tuchel would ideally want a player capable of playing down the left flank of a back three that has forged ties with former academy player Nathan Ake.

But Gazzetta dello Sport report Skriniar could also be an option for that role, with Chelsea asking about the Slovak at a meeting with Inter bosses on Monday.

The two clubs were negotiating Romelu Lukaku’s loan to San Siro – which could be approved this week for a loan fee of just £7million.

Earlier in the talks, Chelsea had asked about the possibility of including the likes of Alessandro Bastoni and Lautaro Martinez in a deal for Lukaku, which Inter flatly refused and the Blues had initially shown no real interest in Skriniar.

But now Gazzetta says Chelsea are studying the possibility of competing with PSG to sign Skriniar, with Inter welcoming their interest if the Blues meet their asking price.

So far, the French champions are well below Inter’s asking price and Chelsea have been warned Skriniar can leave if a €70m (£60m) bid is received.

Premier League club bosses left the meeting feeling a deal could be possible despite the 27-year-old already agreeing personal terms on a lucrative deal with PSG.

Inter are said to have been surprised by the timing of Chelsea’s request as they failed to mention the defender during weeks of talks about Lukaku.

Considered a big Skriniar fan, Tuchel feels he fits the profile of the centre-back he is looking for to replace Rudiger as he has both leadership qualities and vast experience both in Serie A and internationally.

Chelsea are also stepping up their pursuit of De Ligt and are hoping to persuade Juventus to take on Timo Werner in part swap while the Blues work to secure a deal with Manchester City for Raheem Sterling as well.
