What is The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power about?
The official synopsis for the eight-episode first season from Amazon-owned IMDB reads: “Epic drama set thousands of years before the events of JRR Tolkien. The Hobbit Y The Lord of the rings follows an ensemble of characters, both familiar and new, as they face the dreaded resurgence of evil in Middle-earth.”
That’s a little bit vague, but thankfully, there are a few more details available on the feverishly anticipated TV show.
the rings of power is a series of prequels that will be set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, which lasted around 3,500 years and came to an end with the defeat of Sauron at the hands of an alliance between men and elves. This seismic battle (and Sauron’s brutal surrender) was enacted in the opening minutes of The Fellowship of the Ring.
Amazon’s rights package means you can’t touch the events that took place within the main trilogy of books or The HobbitSo while we’ll likely see this battle depicted on the show… but we won’t be following the timeline much beyond that. That’s because Sauron’s defeat leads to the Third Age of Middle-earth, which is when the events of The Hobbit Y Lord of the Rings film trilogies are set. But fear not, there is much to happen before the Amazon series reaches Sauron’s defeat, with the Second Age spanning thousands of years (although some of this will be compressed by the showrunners).
Even though the Prime Video series is set thousands of years ago, there will still be some familiar characters that appear in the rings of power, thanks to the amazing life expectancy of some species in Middle-earth. Trailers have already confirmed that a young Galadriel, Elrond, and the aforementioned Sauron will appear in the TV show.
Unfortunately, you won’t see characters like Bilbo, Frodo, Sméagol or Aragorn in the new series.
According to vanity fairthe The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will borrow from author JRR Tolkien’s Appendices, a 150-page document containing notes on thousands of years of Middle-earth history. This is a similar approach to The Hobbit film trilogy, which greatly expanded on the original story… though, hopefully, the team behind the rings of power will be more successful.
