GKIDS to bring Masaaki Yuasa’s animated musical feature to theaters this August

GKIDS recently announced that it will bring INU-OHthe latest feature film by renowned director Masaaki Yuasa (Get on your wave, keep your hands off Eizokuen!), to theaters across the country starting August 12. The film made its world debut at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, followed by a North American premiere at the 46th Toronto International Film Festival, marking the acclaimed director’s first invitation to both festivals.

Following the film’s previous showing as a work-in-progress at the Annecy Film Festival 2020, Yuasa returns to Annecy honored as a patron of the Mifa 2022 campus. The visionary filmmaker will also present the new rock musical at a screening event at the festival.

Featuring character creation by manga artist Taiyo Matsumoto (Tekkonkinkreet), who previously collaborated with Yuasa on the anime adaptation of Matsumoto’s Ping Pong the Animation series, the musical animated film tells the story of the friendship between the legendary 14th-century Noh performer Inu-oh and the blind biwa player Tomona. As the two rise from hardship to stardom through their creative partnership, they also come to break each other’s curse.

According to the official synopsis, Born into an esteemed family, Inu-oh is afflicted by an ancient curse that has left him on the fringes of society. When he meets blind musician Tomona, a young Biwa priest haunted by his past, Inu-oh discovers a captivating ability to dance. The pair quickly become inseparable business partners and friends as crowds flock to their larger-than-life electric concerts. But when those in power threaten to break up the band, Inu-oh and Tomona must dance and sing to discover the truth behind their creative gifts.

With the impressive voice of Avu-chan (Queen bee) and Mirai Moriyama, INU-OH is a glam-rock ode to the power of music and a powerful statement on the artistic freedom of one of animation’s rare talents.

Hosted by Japanese production company Science SARU INC., in collaboration with its partner, Japanese production, distribution and sales company Asmik Ace, Inc., the feature opens nationwide in Japan on May 28. INU-OH marks the fifth GKIDS title from visionary director Masaaki Yuasa, following the local releases of Lu Over the Wall, The Night is Short, Walk On Girl, Mind Game, and more recently, Ride your wave.
