By now, you’ve probably seen every episode of Echoes, the Netflix crime drama starring Michelle Monaghan as identical twin sisters Leni and Gina.
As fans watched the cast of Echoes Netflix star in the final scenes of the miniseries, more questions were likely raised than answered.
What is Echoes on Netflix about?
Echoes tells the story of twin sisters Leni and Gina, both played by Michelle, as they switch lives on their birthdays every year to basically inhabit each other’s lives until the next celebration.
Gina is married to Charlie (Daniel Sunjata), a former therapist, and they both live in Los Angeles. Leni is married to Jack (Matt Bomer) and lives on Mt. Echo, where she grew up with her twin.
As the series begins, one of the twins goes missing, setting off a series of events that shed light on family secrets, dangers, and more.
Explanation of the end of the echoes
As the miniseries, which consists of seven episodes in all, begins, audience members are led to believe that Leni is missing. It becomes pretty obvious pretty quickly that she’s actually Gina-who-pretends-to-be-Leni who can’t be found. It turns out that Leni is no longer in agreement with the annual exchange plan and is trying to escape from the situation.
In the seventh and final episode of the series, Gina and Leni are seen running away from their childhood home on Mt. Echo, which is on fire while their father is inside.
The two, spoiler alert!, start arguing over the edge and Leni opens up about the trauma of seeing her father kill her mother. Gina explains that the murder was actually at the behest of her mother, that she wanted to die her way instead of going through the terminal illness she suffered from.

Gina is then seen jumping off the cliff and her body is never found. Unsurprisingly, Leni is framed for murder and flees to Australia.
Plot Twist: While Down Under, someone tells Leni that they recently saw another woman who looked identical to her live in Australia. Leni then assumes that Gina is also alive, even though she has assumed a new identity.
Fast-forward to the last few minutes of the episode, and fans see Gina’s ex-husband Charlie on a tour of a book he’s written about the twins. During an appearance, a woman dressed in black approaches him and asks about the “sister who committed suicide”. Charlie explains that although his body was never recovered, that would be his wife Gina.
Charlie then goes home and sees a woman in a black dress waiting for him, at which point he notes that it must be the same one he found in his apparition. The woman, however, seems confused and tells Charlie that she has been in the house for over an hour, whereupon she refutes her suggestion that she was at the reading as well.
Charlie makes it clear that he doesn’t know which of the twins he’s up against, but asks why he decided to come back. “So many accounts to settle, Charlie,” says the woman in black. “I thought she should start with you.”

Was it Gina or Leni at the end of Echoes?
As of now, Netflix hasn’t announced if there will be an Echoes season 2, so we may never know if Gina or Leni was in the bookstore and if, maybe, they’re both still alive.
However, lead actress Michelle spoke about who she thinks the woman in black was in the final scene of Echoes.
“I had to make a creative decision,” Monaghan told Tudum. (opens in a new tab), official Netflix blog, last week. “So I chose Leni. I think Gina was in the bookstore. I made that decision too.”
And so Michelle herself believes that both twins are alive. We’ll go with that story line as well.
