Does the Luxury EV set benchmarks?

Mercedes’ push into the electric space continues, and as promised, the company has now added the EQS 580 to the lineup. Now Siddharth already drove the car in Germany, but this time I had a chance to drive it on Indian roads. And while India gets the car with the same specs, there’s a lot to talk about because, well, it’s an Indian-made electric car.

Mercedes EQS 580: India’s first luxury electric vehicle

Yes, the EQS 580 will be assembled in India and ours is the only country after Germany that will be able to have local production. The EQS 580 will have an entirely new assembly line that it will be built on, but the final assembly line will be shared with the S-Class, Maybach S-Class, and E-Class. So yes, it’s in a very elite company, but while the others are internal combustion engine cars, the EQS 580 is a fully electric car.

The EQS has a coefficient of drag of 0.2 cd, making it one of the most aerodynamic cars in the world.

Mercedes EQS 580: Design

The EQS 580 is streamlined and has the same dimensions as the AMG EQS 53 4Matic I recently drove. It is beautiful, elegant and beautiful to look at. One look and you’ll know this one has aerodynamics written all over it. There are not many cuts or creases that are noticeable on the car and that is its beauty. The EQS 580 is impressive and we have not an iota of doubt when Mercedes claims that it is one of the most aerodynamic cars in the world with a coefficient of drag of 0.2d. It’s the taillights that really catch your eye because of the pattern inside. The spiral pattern is amazing to look at. One look at that in traffic (and you can tell from a distance) and you know there’s an EQS.

The massive hyper display is the party piece on the EQS 580 bringing a wealth of functionality with a brilliant user interface.

Mercedes EQS 580: cabin and interior

While the AMG variant has a sporty cabin, the EQS 580 is more about luxury and opulence. The cabin is available in two colors, brown and beige and gray and brown. The one we had was gray and brown and my only problem was that it was a dust magnet. I’m afraid there will be a lot of cleaning to do, especially during the rainy season because the mud and dirt will leave its mark there. But what stands out is the 56-inch Hyperscreen. Of course, we needed more time with Hyperscreen because the features are as deep as a rabbit hole. There is a lot to explore because there are so many apps that help you on a daily basis that you need to live with the car for a few days to experience it. You also get the Mercedes me connectivity features, which we have seen in most of the new Mercedes-Benz India cars. The back seat is also a good place to be.

The cabin offers a spacious feel and the rear seats also offer excellent support under the thighs.

There’s plenty of knee room, under-thigh support is excellent, and because of the huge area of glass that surrounds it, the cabin is well-ventilated and feels larger. But the rear seats do not have massage seat functions, they do have the ventilation function and you can even recline the backrest to a more comfortable position. But Mercedes is of the opinion that with all the EQS has to offer, consumers will want to drive it and not be driven by it. Hmm! I don’t buy that explanation.

The EQS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds, silently!

Mercedes EQS 580: How does it drive?

The big USP that Mercedes-Benz will talk about is the fully electric range that the car has of 857 km on a single charge and this figure is certified by ARAI. This makes it the EV with the longest range. It has a 107.8 kWh battery that makes 516 bhp and offers 855 Nm of torque right out of the box. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds and is quick and quiet too. There are driving modes that you can toggle between if you want to improve the way you drive. Sport mode will of course be very snappy and enjoyable too, but it affects range as the kilometers plummet.

The long wheelbase of the EQS 580 means that the belly gets scraped too often

Mercedes EQS 580: driving and handling

Since the rains had just hit the roads, I was definitely curious how the EQS would perform on rough roads and if it would have enough ground clearance. Well, frankly, I had to cautiously drive it through some of the speed bumps. You can raise the suspension 15mm but hey, that’s the only help you get. Given the long wheelbase, the EQS 580’s belly scrapes and it’s an uncomfortable feeling when going over bumps. But the suspension does its job.

The Airmatic suspension is sublime and even on rough roads absolutely keeps passengers in comfort mode. There’s no lateral movement inside and even if you hit a serious bump, the EQS takes it in its stride. Now Airmatic suspension will be standard for the first 500 EQS customers, after which I think it will be available as an option, but Mercedes-Benz India says it will depend on the response they get from consumers.

The air suspension does its job well in terms of ride quality and raises the car 15mm.

Mercedes EQS 580: Safety

On the safety front, there’s a lot this car has to offer. It has a 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating, 9 airbags are standard and of course ADAS level 2 technology, and yes it works great even in India.

The EQS 580 is a luxury electric vehicle that you will enjoy driving just as often

Mercedes EQS 580: Verdict

The company has already received a phenomenal response to the AMG 53 version of the EQS and all the cars have been sold. Priced at Rs. At Rs 1.55 crore, the EQS is less expensive than the S-Class and that’s part of the strategy. Mercedes wants Indian consumers to see the EQS, not as an electric version of the S-Class, but as a luxury electric vehicle that will make them want to drive it and have fun too.

Since the company has received strong demand from the EQS, we believe that it has made the case for the car here in India, whether it is a car that is meant to be driven or not. Well, that’s where my opinion changes, because if you buy a car that costs more than Rs. 1 crore, so I want to sit in the back and relax and not worry about traffic conditions or anything else the road throws at me.

So for me, it’s still the EV version of the S-Class and, like the ICE version, manages to set benchmarks in its segment.
