Dedicated Peterborough United fans will need to cover more miles to see lower-level football next season

Relegation from the Championship to League One means Posh fans attending every league game will cover 5,954 miles and travel from stadium to stadium on the fastest AA-recommended route as mile leaders. That’s about 300 miles further than last season.

The final League One line-up for the 2022/23 season was confirmed last weekend with Port Vale’s 3-0 League 2 play-off final win over Mansfield Town at Wembley.

There will be eight opponents who have played in the top division of English football.

Plymouth and Exeter City are the longest journeys, with Morecame also covering over 200 miles for a single journey. Morecambe’s Mazuma Stadium and Forest Green Rovers’ New Lawn Stadium are new venues for Posh. Those grounds have two of the four lowest capacities next season in League One, according to figures on Wikipedia.

Hillsborough (Sheffield Wednesday) and Pride Park (Derby County) have the two largest capacities, with Portman Road (Ipswich Town) and Stadium:mk (MK Dons) also able to accommodate over 30,000 fans, in the latter case rather unnecessary.

There are seven trips of less than 100 miles, with Posh fans covering just 40 miles to face Cambridge United in a Football League game for the first time since December 2001.
