Earlier this year, we shared the news that Farren Blackburn (A discovery of witches) had signed on to direct Mary Monstera film that will focus on author Mary Shelley as she writes her classic novel Frankenstein. Now Deadline is reporting that Clara Rugaard (I’m a mother) has been cast as Shelley, and Kit Harington (eternal) is on board to play “The Monster.” Also part of the cast are Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (coda) as Mary’s husband Percy Bysshe Shelley and Sebastian de Souza (Normal people) like Lord Byron.
A period film that will have a contemporary shine, mary’s monster has the following synopsis:
Mary is seduced by her own inner monster that catapults her into a dangerous and destructive psychological romance. Realizing that the monster is inextricably linked to her own state of mind, her only route to saving her is to bring it to life.
The screenplay was written by Deborah Baxtrom and Stephen Hallett. Baxtom previously wrote and directed the series. living with frankensteinthat imagined Mary Shelley, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron and the Monster of Frankenstein living in Los Angeles today.
mary’s monster is being produced by Fulwell 73’s Leo Pearlman and Heather Greenwood, along with Rose Picture’s Rose Ganguzza, Max Born, Jake Alden-Falconer and Damon Lane. Executive producer of Legion M with Richard Kondal and Patrick Fischer of Fulwell 73.
Rugaard had this to say about the project:
I am incredibly honored to join this project and be a part of telling the story of such an influential and revolutionary woman. I am beyond excited to bring this celebrated female voice to life and delve deeper into the world and psyche of Mary Shelley.”

And Blackburn provided the following statement:
mary’s monster is a film about the female voice, mental health, gender politics and marginalized youth. For me, no character in history has captured the spirit of the times like Mary Shelley and mary’s monster is the period film that defines the modern youth generation. As a filmmaker, I love that the genre allows us to hold a magnifying glass on these kinds of subjects and see them in the most imaginative way possible, and in my opinion there is nothing more imaginative than Mary Shelley taking on her own. Inner monster! Movies this unique and original don’t come out too often and I’m beyond excited to be at the helm.”
Depending on the term, mary’s monster it is described as a “high-concept rock’n’roll interpretation of the romantic period”. Executive music producer Marius De Vries is curating the soundtrack and will also receive an executive producing credit on the film.
