A thrilling charity football match raised more than £1,200 for a hospice in Reading, Berkshire.

Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice in Southcote provides expert palliative care and support to people across Berkshire living with a life-limiting illness and supports their families.

The vital hospice received a welcome donation following a special football match arranged by Select Car Leasing, an independent car and van leasing company headquartered in Reading.

Select staff came together to form two 11v11 teams that took to Reading FC’s sacred turf at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. The opposing sides were captained by Select directors Mark Tongue and James O’Malley, two lifelong fans of Reading FC and season ticket holders.

The game itself ended 7-3, with James’ team taking the win, although Mark’s team recovered well in the second half.

James said: “As a passionate Reading FC fan, the opportunity to play a game at this famous ground is quite simply a dream come true. It was only a small crowd, but you can still feel how it must feel for the professional players to step onto the pitch on a sold-out match day.

“And of course this is not just about a football game. Like Reading FC and its valuable Community Trust work, the Sue Ryder charity has touched the lives of countless people across the city and beyond, including members of our own Select Car Leasing family.

“We are delighted and privileged to be able to support such a wonderful organization and we will continue to do so in the future.”

Tom Horsfield, Senior Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice said: “Thank you to Select Car Leasing for organizing this special game to raise important funds for our hospice.

“As a charity, we depend on individuals and organizations to give and raise funds for us so we can continue to be there when it matters to people who are going through the most difficult time of their lives.

“We are so grateful for Select Car Leasing’s continued support in helping us provide the expert and compassionate care we are so well known for in the local community.”

The event was also unforgettable for the employees. Aleksey Storchak works in Select’s marketing department and scored two goals – even a through ball which was platen by his team captain, director Mark Tongue.

Aleksey added: “The evening was a great experience and as a newcomer to Select a great opportunity to meet the wider team. Scoring two goals at this amazing stadium is a memory that will stay with me for a long time. I am honored to have the opportunity to raise money for Sue Ryder.”

If you would like to make a contribution to the charity, the JustGiving page is still active.
