What is Chainsaw Man about?

Chainsaw Man is an action horror series based on the award-winning manga of the same name, written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto and serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump.

The story follows a teenager named Denji, who lives with an evil chainsaw dog named Pochita. Denji reaps his father’s sins from him when he is forced to pay his debts by collecting demon corpses with Pochita. Just when Denji thinks his impoverished life couldn’t get any worse, he is betrayed and killed. As he begins to walk away from this deadly coil, Denji makes a contract with his Chainsaw Devil and is revived as “Chainsaw Man”, also described as a man with a devil’s heart. Being a human capable of becoming a Demon makes him special; therefore, he was approached by the government to become a demon hunter.

The trailer below suggests that 13 years ago, the United States suffered a terrorist attack with firearms, where a Gun Devil appeared. And without spoiling anything, this is a big deal regarding the setting of the story.

Chainsaw Man is set in a world where demons originate from the fears of humans. Generally considered highly dangerous, demons originate from Hell and people can accept contracts from them to gain their power. Demon hunters also exist to employ or execute demons. However, the strongest Demons reside in Hell, all of whom have never died and are overseen by a stronger Hell Demon.

Another important Devil lore includes certain conditions (which our protagonist Denji fulfills) that allow Devils to inhabit dead human bodies and gain some of their personality and memories, thus becoming a creature known as a Fiend.
