Australians are paying more to watch the Premier League as football fans juggle the costs of multiple streaming services

Football fans who want to watch the English Premier League in Australia next season will have to pay more for the privilege.

Optus Sport, the current holders of the Australian broadcasting rights, confirmed on May 29 that their subscription fees will change from August 1st.

Optus Sport subscriptions previously cost $14.99 per month and were free for select Optus customers.

Beginning August 1, subscriptions will increase to a monthly fee of $24.99 or $199 for a yearly package. Optus customers will also be billed $6.99 per month for the service.

In addition to the Premier League, Optus Sport also shows the Women’s Super League, the J-League, certain international matches and will be the Australian main channel for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

The streaming service recently suspended Premier League rights Down Under for another six years and believes raising the subscription price will allow them to continue offering a quality product.

“This compares well to other content streaming services that have sprung up in the Australian landscape and is Optus Sport’s first pricing change since we launched in 2016,” Optus Sport said in a statement Regarding the price change.

“We want you to know that we are fully committed to offering value for money, so from August all live and on-demand Premier League matches will be streamed in 1080p HD on supported devices . That means you can see all the action from the world’s top league in exceptional detail.

“We’ll continue to bring you every game live, plus full replays, mini-matches, highlights, magazine shows and more so you can see your team without missing a beat.”

Optus Sport’s announcement comes at a difficult time for many Australians who are struggling financially.

Football fans have seen over the past year how the division of competition rights has forced them to take out multiple subscriptions to watch the sport they love.

While Optus Sport has the Premier League, Stan Sport acquired UEFA rights from them last year, while Serie A, Bundesliga and La Liga are shown on beIN Sports, accessible via Kayo. Fans who wanted to watch every A-League Men game this season would also have needed a Paramount+ subscription.

Combined, all four services could cost as much as $82 a month once Optus Sport’s price changes and fans aren’t happy that football’s price keeps going up.

The 2022/23 Premier League season is set to start on August 6 with reigning champions Manchester City after beating Liverpool by a single point.
