The Premier League club’s priority signings this summer

Arsenal are in for a big summer as they rebound from narrowly missing out on the Top 4 and the Champions League.

Overtaken by north London rivals Tottenham, the Gunners face the reality of Europa League football next season. The Thursday-Sunday schedule could still hamper their bid for the Top 4 and they will need to add depth to their roster if they want to compete on multiple fronts.

Mikel Arteta faces several key recruitment decisions as the club faces an exodus of forwards. Alexandre Lacazette is set to leave in the coming weeks while Eddie Nketiah could still stay at the Emirates but destinations are still being sought.

This is the latest news from Arsenal.

Marseille’s saliba stance

Marseille are set to start talks with Arsenal to make William Saliba’s loan permanent after Mikel Arteta said he must return to the Emirates next season.

The Spaniard made it clear that the defender will need to ‘come back’ to his home club when his loan deal at Marseille expires as he plans to reintegrate the defender into his side next season. However, Saliba has expressed his desire to extend his stay in the south of France as he wants to play in the Champions League after an impressive season in which he was named Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year.

According to L’Equipe, Arsenal have promised the centre-back he will play an ‘integral role’ in Arteta’s side. The north Londoners are also looking to extend his current contract, which expires in 2024, to prove to the rising star that he is part of the club’s long-term plans.

Keown warns despite Elneny deal

Arsenal completed their first significant deal this summer by tying Mohamed Elneny to a new deal, but the Gunners cannot afford to rest on their laurels.

Speaking to talkSPORT recently, the former defender expressed his concern about the quality Arsenal possess in the middle of the pitch, stating: “In the middle, I think the club needs to be strengthened [Granit] Xhaka, it’s time for a change, I’m not saying to get rid of him completely. I just feel like if he comes and contributes in midfield then he has to get better and develop further.”

Morata deal “closed”

Arsenal are reportedly ‘very close’ to signing Alvaro Morata this summer after a move for the Spaniard fell through in January.

The Spanish striker has long been a target for the Gunners and the prospect of a move has been re-examined as the north London side look to expand their attacking options ahead of the 2022/23 season. Alexandre Lacazette is expected to leave at the end of his contract and although Eddie Nketiah appears to have agreed a new contract at the Emirates Stadium, there is still an urgent need for reinforcements.

Now it seems the Gunners are keen to bring in a forward. According to Sport, the Gunners are “very close” to sealing Morata’s signing for a fee of £25million.
