Mikel Arteta’s end-of-season speech

After the devastation of missing out on Champions League football in the dying throes of the 2021/22 season, Arsenal fans may find some perspective a week later.

The Gunners sat in the box seat to secure a place in the top four until back-to-back defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, paving the way for the former to snatch fourth place most recently. Overall, however, manager Mikel Arteta has overseen a season of steady progress.

The challenge for the club now is to find a way to stay in contention next season and potentially close the gap with some of the division’s elite sides.

mirror sports has the latest Arsenal news at the start of a crucial summer window for the north London club.

Emery signings rated

Despite his success with Villarreal, Unai Emery’s time at Arsenal was far from memorable.

Emery may have guided the Gunners to a Europa League final but during his year and a half at Emirates Stadium the football was uninspiring and the results were poor. His successor – Arteta – while far from perfect, seems to be putting the team back on track.

The current manager has also been ruthless towards some players signed by his predecessor. Of the 12 players taken over from Emery, more than half have moved and there is the potential for a few more to leave this summer.

Possible double transmission shock

Arsenal will reportedly face significant competition from Tottenham on two of their key transfer targets this summer.

The Gunners have been linked with Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans and Nottingham Forest full-back Djed Spence in recent weeks, with the squad being light on both areas of the pitch during the tense run-in.

However, it has been hinted that Spurs are ready to compete for both players in the market as they are armed with a £150m cash injection and the promise of Champions League football.

Tielemans is expected to leave Leicester in the coming weeks with his contract expiring at the end of next season. Meanwhile, Spence was loaned to Forest from Middlesbrough and played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League.

Aubameyang ‘sad’ at Arsenal slip-up

Former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has shared his disappointment at the Gunners missing out on the top four.

Aubameyang was part of the Arsenal squad for the first half of the season before Arteta made the decision to move him on following a dispute in January. The Gabonese international was not directly replaced, much to the chagrin of some sections of the fan base.

Despite the bitter nature of his departure, it seems the former Borussia Dortmund star still holds some respect for his former club.

“I have a lot of friends over there,” he said when asked about Arsenal. “Obviously I wish them all the best for next season. I think it will be a good thing for them to come back to the Europa League too and hopefully they can win it.”
