Arsenal gave Omar Rekik a transfer boost amid interest from Lille after absorbing £51m

Arsenal have quite a number of youngsters coming through their Hale End Academy. Under-23 coach Kevin Betsy turned a side struggling from relegation in PL2 into a title challenge this season.

However, with quality at the academy, interest is rising and Arsenal are already seeing the potential threat of snooping clubs. Central defender Omar Rekik has been impressing since joining from Hertha Berlin in 2021.

The 20-year-old has already made his senior debut for Tunisia national team and featured at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. It’s not surprising that he’s on the list of a number of clubs.

The latest confirmed prospect is French club Lille, according to RMC Sport. The Ligue 1 club have a good relationship with Arsenal after signing deals for Gervinho, Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Magalhaes.

They see Rekik as a player who could be a future star for the team. However, they will face resistance from both the club and the player, who is very happy with how the club sees him.

Rekik recently spoke about the potential that he could be worth the transfer fee in the future. However, pointed out that Arsenal are ‘serious’ about him.

“Of course it would be a dream to be worth 60 million euros or more,” he said in an interview with Bild. “Because that would mean that I’ve developed really well in terms of sport. But sporting success is more important to me.

“I don’t have a specific goal. If Arsenal had waited a few months, they would have gotten me for free. Now they’ve spent so much money on me. I want to repay that with performance. The club means business.” about me, and I’m grateful for that.”

Despite the seriousness indicated by Arsenal, he faces quite a struggle to break into the Arsenal first team. He has up to four older players in front of him.

Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes and Rob Holding have featured heavily for Mikel Arteta this season. William Saliba is also set to return and is said to be a key part of plans for next season.

Perhaps Lille’s interest could turn into a loan for the player. Arsenal were open to their young starlets gaining experience at senior level but did not see much value in selling players. Rekik’s ambitious future fee would be a welcome change for Technical Director Edu.
